Dropping Knowledge

I saw an ad about this site awhile back, and while it momentarily piqued my curiosity, I didn’t see a reason to get excited over it.

Frankly, I still don’t. But since Blog Explosion and Blog Clicker are “paying” me (in credits), I’ll play along and tell you all what I think about it.

Here’s their mission statement:

dropping knowledge :: overview

Mission
dropping knowledge is a global initiative to turn apathy into activity. By hosting an open conversation on the most pressing issues of our times, we will foster a worldwide exchange of viewpoints, ideas and people-powered solutions. However knowledge is defined, by dropping it freely to others, we all gain wisdom.

The idea is noble, don’t let me leave you thinking I don’t realize that. I just think it’s pretentious. It’s a re-enactment of a 60’s sit-in, taken to global proportions. The hippies accomplished absolutely nothing positive (unless you consider the advancements in designer drugs), and wasted so much of the potential of an entire generation that we’ve really never recovered from it.

So along comes a group of well-intentioned people with no real power, no political clout, no measure of control over the issues they will discuss… and they think they can change the world. Well, la-de-da, color me impressed.

You people want real reform? Elect officials with the balls to enact them. You say you live in a country where the non-democratically elected government keeps you from working towards reform? Start a revolution. Take some personal responsibility for your own lives. Quit sitting around talking about it, hoping to get the “big boys” involved in your internal problems. While my government is ready, willing, and able to help you out, more often than not your other lilly-livered liberal friends go out of their way to piss all over the manner in which we provide that help.

In summary… Dropping Knowledge: Nice, feel good idea… but not likely to actually do much beyond making a few people feel good about themselves.
