Animals “sixth sense” regarding impending disasters

CNN.com – Did animals’ ‘sixth sense’ save them from tsunami? – Dec 30, 2004

Ok, so I have an idea for an effective disaster prediction/warning plan. Pick out long-lifespan animals with known migratory patterns (or better yet, animals that don’t migrate). Plant tracking devices in a large number of them using GPS technology. We don’t have to be concerned with tracking each one, we just need to have real-time tracking of sudden, large scale movements. Monitor the tracking devices for such movements, and tie it into a real-time warning system. If we don’t have this “sixth sense” ourselves, why not find a way to use it where it already exists?

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) — Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed
over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly
missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
