Greenpeace leaves their mark

Awhile back I mentioned the animal-loving antics of http://jonathanmurray.com/greymatter/archives/00000727.htm Peta. Today we get to read about the earth-loving happiness that is http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyid=2005-11-01T164246Z_01_EIC160151_RTRUKOC_0_US-PHILIPPINES-GREENPEACE.xml Greenpeace.

MANILA (Reuters) – Greenpeace said Tuesday it will pay nearly $7,000 in damages after the environmental group’s flagship, the Rainbow Warrior II, hit a coral reef at a world heritage site in the southern Philippines.

The accident Monday was “very regrettable,” Greenpeace said in a joint statement with the Tubbataha National Marine Park, but it laid some of the blame on maritime charts showing its ship was 1.5 miles from the reef.

See, when Greenpeace screws up and destroys nature, they pay a fine, say “we’re sorry”, and move on. But if anyone else had crashed into a reef, you can bet Greenpeace would have created an international crisis, demanded millions to study the long-term effects, and generally made a nuisance of themselves to gain headlines and make life miserable for someone who probably just made a simple mistake.

Too bad the reef didn’t gain proper revenge on the venerable “Rainbow Warrior II” and rip a hole in the hull sending the wretched craft to the bottom… at least then it could have done some good, becoming part of the reef it ripped into.
