GMail must be getting ready to go public

Awhile back I posted here asking for an invite to Google’s web-based email system, GMail, which I happily received. Silly me, I had thought the invites were relatively sparse and hard to find. It actually took very little time to track down an invite and get the account.

Today, I noticed GMail has upped the number of invites available to 50 per account. I have two active GMail accounts now, so that’s 100 invites sitting there waiting for me to use. Wow. This tells me that Google is no longer pretending to be in private beta – they obviously want to have as many users in the system as possible before declaring it “free and open for all”.

So… if you want a GMail account and still haven’t managed to find an invite, feel free to ask here. I can’t imagine anyone not having one if they really want it, but hey, maybe you’re “that person” who never heard of it.
