To own your own name

I’ve been chasing a personal dream for a few years now. I never talked about it much, but it’s been in the back of my mind ever since I got interested in carving a spot out on the web. The dream? To own my own name.com (or .net – it never really mattered to me which one).

For years, Jonathan Murray, a photographer in Washington state (I think) owned JonathanMurray.com, and an investment broker in Maryland owned JonathanMurray.net. The photographer had a site up to display some of his work, so I never really coveted that domain… much. The investment broker, however, has never done the first thing to utilize his domain, and that was aggravating. I’ve monitored both of these domains for a few years, and even emailed the owner of the unused .net domain asking if he’d consider selling it to me. He insisted he had plans for it (lies), and it has sat dormant, taunting me for years.

Last year, JonathanMurray.com went dark. The owner’s email address had been canceled, and when renewal time came up, he didn’t take action. I sincerely hope nothing bad happened to the man; I hope instead his interest in maintaining a domain/website just faded away. Either way, as of this afternoon, his registration and grace period have expired, and I am the new owner of JonathanMurray.com!

I haven’t yet decided whether to maintain both this domain and the new one, or drop this one… worst case I’ll run an auto-redirect to this site until I make that decision.

Coming soon, to a DNS server near you… http://www.jonathanmurray.com JonathanMurray.com

Woo-Hoo!
