Athlete offers protest by disrespect

SI.com – MLB – Delgado to contine war protests with Marlins – Thursday January 27, 2005 7:20PM

File this action in the same drawer with burning the flag.

Displaying blatant disrespect for the nation’s symbols is not an effective way to protest government policy you disagree with. It is an effective way to gain attention, sure. The moments of glory media outlets like CNN will afford you are bound to be exciting – but when the reality of public opinion sets in, the attention you receive may not be all you expect.

Let’s hope the people of Florida and the fans of Major League Baseball are smart enough to recognize this for what it is – an overpaid, spoiled, attention-seeking child dragging his personal agenda where it doesn’t belong, and throwing open insult on the fans of an American institution.

MIAMI (AP) — Carlos Delgado is willing to stand up for his beliefs — or, in his case, not stand up.

At his introductory news conference Thursday with the Florida Marlins, Delgado said he’ll continue to not stand up this season during the playing of God Bless America.
